The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion company based in the United States that hosts most of the top-ranked fighters in the worldand produces numerous events worldwide.The UFC has five weight-divisions and enforces the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts.Dana White serves as the president of the UFC; Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta control its parent company, Zuffa, LLC.
Inspired by vale tudo tournaments in Brazil,the UFC and the sport of MMA have roots in the ancient Olympic combat sport of Pankration in 648 B.C.The UFC held its first competition in Denver, Colorado in 1993. Showcasing fighters of different disciplines—including boxing, Brazilian jiu jitsu, wrestling, Muay Thai and other styles—the UFC sought to identify the most effective martial art in a real fight. After a period of political backlash, the UFC gradually underwent reform by embracing stricter rules and achieving sanctioning with State Athletic Commissions.

PHOENIX, Ariz. (Aug. 11, 2010) – Joe “Diesel” Riggs, Ryan Couture and the four ladies set to compete in the first-ever STRIKEFORCE women’s welterweight (135 pounds) tournament took part in an open workout for the media at the Riches Wrestling Complex on the campus of Arizona State University on Wednesday.
STRIKEFORCE women’s welterweight contenders Miesha “Takedown” Tate, Carina “Beauty But The Beast” Damm, Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano and Maiju Kujala will join Riggs and Couture at STRIKEFORCE Challengers this Friday, Aug. 13, at Dodge Theatre in Phoenix, Ariz., live on SHOWTIME®.
The winners of each semifinal bout on Friday will face off in the tournament final later that night, just before the main event matchup between Riggs (32-12) and Louis Taylor (6-1) that will be fought at a catch weight of 182 pounds. Couture, a member of the Las Vegas, Nev., based Xtreme Couture fight team, will face Lucas Stark of Chandler, Ariz. in a three-round lightweight (155 pounds) bout.
During Thursday’s weigh-ins, current undefeated STRIKEFORCE Women’s Welterweight Champion Sarah Kaufman and STRIKEFORCE Women’s Middleweight (145 pounds) Champion Cris Cyborg will meet fans and be available for autographs. The media is invited to the Dodge Theatre at 4:30 p.m. with fighter’s stepping on the scales at 5 p.m.

“When I started out fighting on shows in high school and after that I made dog crap money. Now, I’m able to support a family of four. MMA is definitely getting bigger, especially in Phoenix.
“I can’t predict how things will go Friday night. I always expect the worst, train for the worst and just hope for the best. You just never know in this sport. There’s just so many different ways of losing. If you want to take a fight at this level you have to train at this level and that’s what I’ve done. I’ll do my best to put him out.”
